Amazon.com Product Description Creative's Inspire 5.1 5200 speaker system offers full-bodied sound from a compact design, making it a terrific choice for stereo PC music, movie, or game listening--including EAX and DirectSound 3D games. The system comes with a set of five bookshelf/satellite speakers and a 17-watt powered subwoofer made of reinforced-wood. Convenient speaker stands angle the satellites toward your listening position. The Inspire series aims to provide the highest-value speakers that Creative can offer, balancing cohesive psychoacoustic "imaging," sonic accuracy, and affordability. Inspire 5.1 5200 has the ability to simulate 5.1-surround sound from Sound Blaster 4-channel sound cards using Creative's proprietary CMSS upmix technology. The 6-watts-per-channel satellites use Creative's Image Focusing Plate (IFP) design for broad sound dispersion that doesn't interfere with the speakers' natural tonal balance. You can mount the supplied wired remote control anywhere on your desktop so volume adjustments will always be right at your fingertips. The system offers an independent bass-level control and a single stereo minijack (.125-inch) analog audio input. The system's five compact speakers--earmarked for center channel, front left and right, and surround left and right--and subwoofer are designed as a cohesive set. Each speaker is sonically matched and driven by its own discrete amplifier. The center, front, and rear satellites take up minimal desktop space, while the non-directional subwoofer can be placed behind or under furniture, or anywhere else that's out of the way. What's in the Box Three front speakers with attached 6-foot cables, two rear speakers with attached 16-foot cables, one subwoofer, a wired volume/bass control with power switch and a headphone jack, a power supply adapter, and a quick-start guide.

Solid performer for 4+ years May 21, 2007 I actually purchased the 6.1 version, which is no longer sold, but exactly the same except for a rear center channel speaker. In early 2003, when I bought it, it was definitely one of the least expensive speaker setups out there. When I took it home, though, I was surprised at how much sound these things can put out. Impressively, I can't perceive much distortion AT ALL at loud volumes, and the sound is very clean. The software package with the EAX environment options and speaker settings is excellent, and my only complaint is that it is tricky to find a balance between rear and front channel volume if your rear speakers are placed far away. I have not experienced the volume fading problem that has been mentioned in a couple other reviews. Bass can be overwhelming, but that is a capability of the subwoofer, not a problem - it is easily adjusted via the controller. This package is pretty simple - I would have liked to see other connection options, but hey, it's over four years old and was very inexpensive. Overall, how can I complain about these speakers? They sound perfect to my ears (though I'm not particularly an audiophile) and I listen to mp3 music constantly. Sure, I could afford to purchase a "better" speaker system, but I have yet to find a reason to.
Defective by design March 24, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Make sure you're happy with the volume setting on the control, then never touch it again if possible. I've had issues with the volume fading to near silence if I have to turn down the volume with the hardware control. Tapping on the knob brings the volume back.
After looking up solutions to this problem, it turns out that there is a floating ground issue with the volume control. This is a manufacturing flaw that has hit more than a few users.
When they work, they're great. If you're struggling to get your sound back, not so much. If not for the volume issue, I'd keep 'em. Instead, I just bought a set of Logitech X-540 speakers.

A Great System.. for any price range March 20, 2005 I just recently bought this speaker speaker system and have not a single bad thing to say about it. I tend to believe many of the problems reported are software problems that reviewers don't know about. As, once I bought this, I found some settings I didn't even know about and had to change them for the best listening. Anyway, about the speakers themselves, they rock. I'm a huge music lover. After reading some reviews, I read these speakers only sound good on true 5.1 such as DVDs. Simply not true. These speakers play normal music perfectly. After fine tuning my software settings, I found the sweet spot and it sounds great. The subwoofer has great bass. I'm a bass fanatic and this fills all my needs. However, for certain songs, when bass isn't required, for example, I listen to Bach. The bass can be also turned off for very clear listening. However, when listening to bass tests with the bass maxed out the woofer kicks like you wouldn't believe. I would recommend these speakers to anyone!
Good Speakers for Price January 17, 2005 Im running these speakers with an integrated sound card, which is 5.1. It was easy to setup, and great sound. The remote makes it easy to use. The sound goes up to level 8, but you really dont hear much at levels 1-2. Although they are great. Also, if you have a cell phone near by, it makes noises, but thats just a technicality. Highly recommended for the price. Enjoy!
