4 out of 5 stars Solved my problem   November 24, 2008

I got this monitor with some hesitation, as some of the reviewers really did not like it. I have a specific need though - a verbal 2 1/2 year old whose nursery is on the third floor, while we spend most time on the first floor. The most important feature for me is the ability to respond to him over the monitor when he calls out. Instead of running up two flights of stairs only to find he doesn't need anything, I can ask him what's wrong, or tell him I'm coming and to be patient.

For those purposes, it works great. However, I would not recommend this model for an infant, as it is not as sensitive as some other monitors on the market. With an infant, it's important to hear whether or not they are breathing at all, and this monitor is just not that sensitive.

Overall, I'm very happy with this, and it solved my problem perfectly.

4 out of 5 stars Satisfied, but there are shortcomings   August 18, 2008

I bought this for communication with my mother who needs help walking and with most of her activities. Walkie talkies didn't work because she would forget what she had to do to communicate from her end. With this unit, for her, it's totally hands free. I can place her unit anywhere she is and take the "parent" unit wherever I am. If she needs something, all she needs to do is speak. If I want to talk with her, I just press the talk button. Transmissions are clear and static-free. So far, it's worked flawlessly. We live in a large, fourteen room house and the units work everywhere and at the greatest distance. I've also used the parent unit successfully while in the yard.

The units do have some shortcomings. For some reason, only one set of batteries is included. And, they only hold a charge for a few hours use. Consequently, I have to keep both units plugged in for most of the day. And, as others have reported, there is an annoying crackle when the parent unit picks up a signal from the baby unit. This is loud enough to keep all but the soundest sleepers awake.

But, all in all, I am satisfied. The units give me peace of mind and I don't have to check on my mother as often as before and she can get help as soon as she needs it.

3 out of 5 stars Works Well, But VERY Annoying!!!   June 25, 2008

The monitor picks up the baby's sounds well from 3 rooms away through 4 walls (doors open). The 2 way communication works well too.

On the down side: The monitor makes a loud popping noise as it checks communication with the other monitor every minute or so. It is very annoying and makes it hard to sleep in the room with the reciever. I placed it on the other side of my room and turned the volume down but it was still so annoying that we just turned it off and listened for the baby the old fashioned way.

If it weren't for that MAJOR drawback I would have given it a great rating and I guess if you just want to use it for when the baby takes naps and your awake it is fine. I have used it a few times for when I'm in the garage doing things and the baby's sleeping or playing.

5 out of 5 stars Very Sensitive! A Good Thing, No?   April 11, 2008

Let me start off by saying that we only use this monitor while we are awake. We are co-sleepers, but need to monitor the little one (4 month old) when she is alone in bed for a few hours in the evening. For this purpose, it works flawlessly. She doesn't even have to make a very loud noise for the monitor to be set off, it will 'fuzz' at the sound of her turning over. Since we live in an apartment and there is often noise outside the window or from the unit above, it will react to that (but we can hear it too and know that it's not the baby). Often, if we hear a fuzz, fuzz, fuzz in quick succession then we know it's her and she's starting to toss and turn and we can get to her before she completely wakes up and starts crying.

However, if we were light sleepers and needed to monitor the baby all night, it would probably drive us nuts. It would most likely be set off by every noise in the building, plus cars arriving/leaving in the parking lot, and every little movement of the baby...all. night. long.

On the other hand, if you really want to make sure you hear every sound the baby makes then you can't go wrong with this one.

I love that it is 2-way and my husband and I have used that feature several times. It also has the alternating channel feature for privacy, which was important to us. It has a nice safety beep that comes on if for some reason the parent unit is on, but the baby unit gets turned off so that you know you need to check on the unit. The price is great too.

1 out of 5 stars Not good if you have a toss and turner.   April 5, 2008

This monitor is terrible if you have a baby that tosses and turns at night. The constant "clicking" of the the monitor on the parent unit was bad enough, but I found the baby unit "clicks" on and off, making noise in the nursery too. I was so excited to get this because it looks sleek and modern but after two nights it is going back.
Also, the battery on the parent unit makes an awful noise when the battery is low (not something you want to deal with at 3 second intervals at 2am).
The walkie talkie is cool, but not worth keeping the unit.
